Descending from G on the 3rd fret of the 1E String, play all of the notes of the first three strings (the white keys on the piano). Also, incorporate beginner chords E, Am, and A. Assign a finger to a fret. 1st finger (pointer) first fret. 2nd finger (middle) second fret. 3rd finger (ring) 3rd fret. 4th finger (pinky) fourth fret. This is called 'first position'.
This lesson focuses on the 'High' E string (1st string). It also incorporates elements of tempo. The first measure you play a WHOLE note (4 beats) playing open E. The second measure you play F (1st fret) using HALF notes (play on beats 1 and 3). The third measure you play QUARTER notes on the 3rd fret (G). Reminder: Keep your 1st finger down on F when you play G on the 3rd fret.
If you figure out the pattern, it makes this brain teaser much easier! Try and play this along with a metronome, keeping a steady rhythm. Try this exercise on all six strings!
This is a great exercise to work all four fingers, as well as develop coordination between the strumming and fretting hand. As you ascend, try to keep your fingers down. For example, if you move from the 5th to the 6th, keep your first finger down on the 5th fret. 5th fret is played with first finger (pointer) 6th fret- 2nd finger (middle) 7th fret- 3rd finger (ring) 8th fret- 4th finger (pinky)
