the main centerpiece in funk music is the bassline so try to make the bassline more rhythmic; use a combination of slapped low notes and popped high notes to add more of a rhythmic feel to the song, remember the rhythm guitar is secondary to the bassline, but still important in maintaining a rhythmic beat. hope that helped!
